Happy New Year from the AFIF Team

The team at AFIF would like to wish all AFIF Members a Happy New Year and prosperous 2018.

AFIF will be continuing to represent our members on a range of live issues from last year and attending industry engagement forums and meetings on future developments in our industry. In this week’s News we provide an outline of the forums and activities at which AFIF represents members.

AFIF 2018 National Conference and Gala Dinner

Novotel Sydney – Brighton Beach

AFIF has responded to overwhelming members’ feedback to hold the AFIF Conference 2018 in Sydney this year. As the AFIF Conference 2018 will be in a major city, the 1 Day program will be focussed on providing vital important content and speakers tackling the topics and issues members need. Details of limited sponsorship and exhibition packages for this exciting 1 day event will be released in the New Year.  Circle Friday 25 May in your diary, it’s shaping up to be the annual industry event not to be missed and we’re hoping to see you there!


Air Cargo CTOs Update 

Further to the Peak Season updates in the AFIF Weekly News over the past weeks, the CTOs report, post-Christmas and New Year, their terminals are all operating normally, without backlogs or truck queues.   AFIF, on behalf of members has worked with the CTOs to seek improvements to service delivery. The CTOs have been positive to AFIF’s approach and have tried various initiatives to achieve improved outcomes. Though the root cause issues remain, which are explored in the Weekly News.

Management Changes at Menzies Aviation 

Menzies Aviation has announced the appointment of Kayla Moa, Cargo Manager NSW & ACT. Kayla Moa will report to Beau Paine who moves from Cargo Manager NSW & ACT to the newly created role of Regional Vice President, Cargo - Australia. Beau Paine will be responsible for Menzies Aviation cargo businesses and services, Australia-wide. AFIF congratulates Beau Paine and Kayla Moa on their appointments. 

VICT Webb Dock Operating Normally

VICT reports the terminal is operating normally, ships are being worked, no backlogs or delays. There are 3 additional Vessel Calls at VICT this week and gate opening times have been extended on Saturday 6th January to 17:30. Details in Weekly News.

Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) and Agencies – Change of Email Addresses

As outlined in AFIF Weekly News on 21 December, the amalgamation of several departments and functions into the Department of Home Affairs, has meant changes to email addresses for former DIBP, ABF and OTS departments. Full details of the new addresses in the Weekly News.

Taskforce Makes Largest Meth Seizure in Australia’s History

A taskforce of joint agencies has seized a record 1.2 tonnes of methamphetamine on the west coast of Australia. Eight men have been charged as a result of a complex, multi-agency investigation traversing the country. It is the largest meth bust in Australia’s history, topping an unrelated 903-kilogram seizure in Melbourne in the first quarter of 2017. It is the largest ever drug seizure in Western Australia. DAWR – AFIF’s Formal Response to Proposed Changes to Cost Recovery Charges for Approved Arrangements – Broker classes & Non-Broker Premises

In November, DAWR released Notices to industry seeking comment on proposed changes to cost recovery charges for Approved Arrangements.  Members will be aware that AFIF has lobbied DAWR to review the current charging structure of a flat rate $2900 per annum. The issues related to perceived inequality across users and the appropriateness of the charge. AFIF’s formal response to DAWR in the Weekly News

DAWR – Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) Risk Season 2017-18 Increased Inspections for Goods from Italy - Repeated

Further to previous updates in AFIF Weekly News in past weeks on the seasonal BMSB threat from USA and which has spread to Italy. DAWR has provided and updated Notice advising of increased inspections of containerised goods from Italy. Details and Notice in Weekly News.

DAWR - Changes to Import Conditions

On 21 December 2017, a variety of updates occurred to the Biosecurity Goods Determinations which specify whether import permits, or alternative conditions for import, must be met to bring particular goods into Australia and its territories. The majority of the changes apply from 21 December 2017 with the exception of alternative conditions for fresh cut flowers and foliage. These new conditions will not commence until 1 March 2018 to allow DAWR time to work with industry on transitioning to new requirements. Details of commodities and Notice in Weekly News.

IATA 58th Edition Cannot be Used – Out of Date 1 January 2018 - NEW 2018 IATA Publications – 59TH Edition DGR - IN STOCK - IMMEDIATE DELIVERY - ORDER NOW

The 2018, 59th Edition of the DGR and associated products are available from AFIF. Note the 58th Edition is out of date and cannot be used, there are a large number of changes in the 59th edition. Effective 1 January 2018 - Removal of $77.00 Fee & AU Number – ‘IATA Registration of Persons Qualified in Acceptance of Dangerous Goods’. DG Certification Remains Unchanged – Repeated

AFIF on behalf our freight forwarder representation at the IATA Cargo Executive Council (CEC) has successfully proposed and obtained the removal of the IATA DG Registration Fee $77.00. Effective 1 January 2018, the AU Number Registration and Fee with IATA will cease. The AU Number will no longer be shown on AWB. Details in Weekly News

Scam Warning – Members Beware – Repeated

An AFIF Member has reported a scam regarding overseas remittance of accounts.  The example relates to Indonesia, whereby the Member’s Agent in Jakarta had their emails hacked and a request was made of the Australian Agent to remit payment funds into a different account.
