AFIF has responded to overwhelming members’ feedback to hold the AFIF Conference 2018 in Sydney this year. As the AFIF Conference 2018 will be in a major city, the 1 Day program will be focussed on providing vital important content and speakers tackling the topics and issues members need. Draft program and details of limited sponsorship and exhibition packages for this exciting 1 day event will be released shortly.  Circle Friday 25 May in your diary, it’s shaping up to be the annual industry event not to be missed and we’re hoping to see you there!


DAWR: Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) Risk Season 2017-18 Mandatory Treatment for Containerised Goods from Italy – DAWR Response to AFIF’s Concerns on Implications for Industry

Effective immediately, all containerised cargo ex Italy that is not fumigated offshore for BMSB, will have to undergo approved treatment onshore here. There are a few excluded tariff items. Implications for Importers and Members include - the surge in containers requiring fumigation will impact the limited number of fumigation service provider companies. DoHA-ABF – Border Watch Tip Off leads to a Positive Detection

AFIF has reported on the success of the DoHA-ABF Border Watch program and the importance of the support of industry in providing tip offs of suspicious, unlawful, or criminal activities targeting Australia’s border. Last week a positive detection was achieved following a tip off to Border Watch. Details in Weekly News

ABF Border Watch Included in AFIF Basic Training Courses from February

AFIF and ABF have joined forces to provide Border Watch training in AFIF’s basic training courses, to educate new entrants to the industry of the threats posed to the border by criminal activity. From February, local Co-ordinators of ABF Border Watch will provide a Border Watch presentation to students attending the AFIF Basic Import Airfreight Procedures and AFIF Basic Import and Export Sea Freight Procedures courses in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Trade and Goods Compliance Advisory Group (CAG) Meeting Minutes Released

AFIF attended the CAG Meeting in Canberra on 13 December. The CAG Meeting Minutes have now been published on the DoHA-ABF Website. Highlights include an update on the DoHA and ABF’s status and role in the new department; update on industry’s compliance performance; import cargo reporting compliance paper; CAG activities and outcomes in 2017. FP Marine Risks Australia Expands its National Logistics Team and Announces the Opening of its New Melbourne Office

FP Marine has announced the opening of their Melbourne office in Niddrie. The office comprises highly respected insurance brokers Mark Lonergan, Andrew Gordon and Leonie Richardson. Catherine Entsief, a long-standing member of the FP Marine Sydney team will be joining the Melbourne team shortly. The Melbourne office builds on FP Marine’s network of Sydney and Brisbane offices. Hutchison Ports Commences Sideloader Fee in Sydney – Repeated  

AFIF has been advised by Hutchison Ports of the commencement of the Sideloader Fee in Sydney on 9 February. AFIF discussed the fee with a Hutchison Ports representative, confirming “the fee has been in the Hutchison Ports tariff since 2015, but has not been applied until now”. Details in Weekly News

IATA – November Peak Season Air Freight Demand Up 8.8%    

IATA has released data for global air freight markets showing that demand, measured in freight tonne kilometres (FTKs), climbed 8.8% in November 2017 compared to the year-earlier period. This was an increase from the 5.8% annual growth recorded in October 2017. Asia-Pacific airlines saw freight volumes increase by 8.1% and capacity expand by 1.2% in November, compared to the same period last year. Full report in the Weekly News

The World Bank invites you to take part in the Survey on Logistics Performance 2017-18. The LPI is based on a survey where freight forwarders assess logistics performance, such as the efficiency of the clearance process, the quality of transport-related infrastructure or the ability to track and trace consignments.
